SF Examiner: Booze fee before Small Business Commission on Monday Print E-mail

July 10, 2010
By: Brent Begin

A fee on booze proposed by Supervisor John Avalos has drawn cheers from health advocates and jeers from some businesses. Now, the discussion will spill out into the public on Monday at the Small Business Commission.

The fee would directly affect liquor wholesalers at about a nickel a drink and pay for health and paramedics expenses incurred by The City because of alcohol abuse. Opponents say that increase would trickle down all the way to consumers and workers.

The commission will take up the conversation Monday at City Hall. The meeting starts at 5:30 p.m.
