Supervisor John Avalos said he hopes to introduce legislation Tuesday that would enact an alcohol fee as The City struggles with closing a budget deficit.

The fee is intended to “to recover some of the costs The City incurs from excessive alcohol use,” Avalos said. He estimated it could generate anywhere from $17 million to $19 million, which he said could offset cuts to some of the health services.

The idea of moving forward with an alcohol fee was first proposed during last year’s budget process.
