The Issues - Anti-Alcohol Advocates Still
Think it's a Good Idea to Raise Alcohol Taxes!

Slowly, it looks like the economy is beginning to recover from years of decline. The job market, including in the hospitality industry, is also beginning to recover. That's good news!

Now, with the economy in such a delicate state of revival, you might think that it's common sense for the government to maintain a hands-off approach when it comes to tax issues.

But, go figure, the anti-alcohol advocates that are consistently lobbying for higher alcohol taxes in California continue to promote their disaster of an idea that would devastate the state's economy and jobs.

Some anti-alcohol crusaders insist what is needed is an excise tax on alcohol which they call "Charge for Harm." If this sounds suspiciously similar to the "alcohol mitigation fee" (tax) that passed the San Francisco County Board of Supervisors last summer and was vetoed by then-Mayor Gavin Newsom, it should.

That victory in San Francisco is an example of the kind of united and coordinated action needed to protect hospitality industry workers and beat back alcohol taxes. And the more of us involved in these activities, the louder and more influential our voice will be, and the greater our impact when it comes time to tell politicians "no"!

California’s hospitality workers are critical to the Golden State’s economic recovery. Our state’s hospitality industry contributes more than $52 billion in economic activity and employs 12 percent of the state's workforce.

But, for the last 12 months, the hospitality industry and its employees have been under severe strain from the state’s severe economic downturn. More than 64,000 hospitality jobs statewide have been lost statewide.

Our state’s decision makers need know that hospitality workers play an integral part in California’s economic recovery…and higher taxes and fees on alcoholic beverages cost jobs.
